IRSG SYMPOSIUM on FUTURE DIRECTIONS IN INFORMATION ACCESS/RETRIEVAL (FDIA)

FDIA will be collocated with the ESSIR 2007 in Glasgow, and held on the
afternoons of the 28th and 29th of August.

Introduction
------------

Information Retrieval conferences are now becoming highly competitive. As
such, it is difficult for many new researchers to present and share their
ideas which are at more formative or tentative stages. The aim of this
symposium is to provide a forum where future directions of information
access can be presented and discussed in an open and friendly environment. 

Why future directions, because we want to encourage submission that focus
on the possible paths so that they can be discussed. Presenting the, what
if scenarios, and solutions to them.

Why Information Access, because it captures the broader ideas of
information retrieval, storage and management to interaction and usage.

Symposium Aims
--------------
The objectives of the IRSG FDIA Symposium are:
	* To provide an accessible forum for early researchers
(particularly PhD students, and researchers new to the field) to share and
discuss their research.
	* To create and foster the formative and tentative research ideas.
	* To encourage discussion and debate.  

The IRSG FDIA Symposium aims to provide researchers with an excellent
opportunity to receive constructive feedback on their current and future
research directions.

Submission focusing on new directions and emerging work in Information
Access/Retrieval which create discussion and provoke reaction are strongly
encouraged. Submissions should provide the necessary background and
motivation of the topic, so as to maximize the benefit to the author and
fellow participants. A paper should include the following:

    * Motivation for the proposed research
    * Background and related work (with key references)
    * Description of proposed research including main research questions
    * Outline of Conceptual/Theoretical Models that will be used
    * Research methodology and proposed experiments (where appropriate)
    * Particular issues highlighted for discussion.

        Users, society, and IR
        User modeling, user studies, user interaction in IR systems
        Novel user interfaces for IR systems
        Visualization and presentation of queries, search results, and
		content
        Information management
        Cross-language and multi-language IR
        IR applications
        Web IR
        Mobile and ubiquitous IR
        Digital libraries
        IR system architectures
        Distributed
        Parallel
        Mobile
        Multimodal
        Open, interoperable, and flexible
        Content representation, and processing
        IR and structured content e.g. XML based
        Unstructured content
        Meta information and structures
        Test and evaluation methods for IR systems
        Test collections and bench marking
        User-oriented and user-centered test and evaluation
        Multimedia and cross-media IR
        Speech and IR
        Image and video IR
        Digital music, radio, and TV

Submissions must be in English, which is the official language of the
symposium.

Format:
-------
6 pages in eWic Formats (MS Word or HTML format Only - we cannot accept
Latex). The proceedings will be made available via the eWic electronic
publication service. 

Single Author only (where, Phd Supervisors and Colleagues should be
included in the acknowledgment section, where applicable). 

All papers will be reviewed with respect to overall quality of
presentation, the potential for future impact of the 
proposed research on the field of Information Retrieval by at least one
senior reviewer. 
Accepted papers will be presented at the symposium as posters, along with
short presentations.

1st of July - Notification
1st of August - Camera ready copies due
21st of August - Papers will be made available online via the eWic system
to all Symposium participants registered.
28th of August (2-5.30pm) - Symposium (Part i)
29th of August -(2-5.30pm) Symposium (Part ii)
