For the past twenty-three years, the ACM Symposium on Applied Computing=20
has been a primary gathering forum for applied computer scientists,=20
computer engineers, software engineers, and application developers from aro=
und the world.
Its proceedings are published by ACM in both printed=20
form and CD-ROM; they are also available on the web through ACM's Digital L=
ibrary.=A0=20
SAC 2009 is sponsored by the ACM Special Interest Group on
Applied Computing (SIGAPP), and is hosted by
University of Hawaii at Manoa and Chaminade
University of Honolulu.=20

Special Track on Information Access and Retrieval (SAC-IAR)

The research context of information access and retrieval aims at modeling, =
designing and=20
implementing systems able to provide efficient and effective content-based =
multimodal=20
(possibly ubiquitous) access to a large amount of multimedia (possibly dist=
ributed) information.=20
Information Retrieval (IR) is the first historical research area aimed at d=
efining systems for=20
the automatic access to huge amounts of textual information. Information Re=
trieval technologies=20
are currently being used in many different application contexts that go far=
 beyond the initial=20
scope of their design. The application of models and techniques proposed an=
d tested in standard=20
experimental contexts to new application areas is a very challenging task t=
hat is worth of great=20
attention by the researchers.
Nowadays there is a growing need to access and retrieve relevant distribute=
d information from=20
anywhere and across media, across languages and across modalities. With the=
 expansion of the Internet=20
and of the Web, and the availability of mobile devices other access techniq=
ues have been identified=20
and developed, such as Recommender Systems and Information Filtering system=
s, Question Answering=20
Systems, Meta-search engines, and location based services. The current tren=
ds of the research in=20
information=A0 access and retrieval include (multimedia) document indexing,=
 (multimedia) document classification and categorization, (multimodal) user=
 interfaces, information visualization, query=20
languages, topic detection and tracking, management of multi-lingual and mu=
ltimodal information=20
access and retrieval, Geographic Information retrieval etc.=20
This special track is the eighth edition in the context of SAC and is conce=
rned with the theory, implementation and evaluation of information access a=
nd retrieval technologies to novel application=20
areas and novel contexts.=20
We invite submission of original research contributions, and experimentatio=
ns in emerging fields such=20
as Geographic Information Retrieval, multimodal Interfaces for information =
access and presentation.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------=
------------------=A0=20
The topics of interest include:
* (multimedia) document classification and categorization,=20
* (multimodal) information visualization and user interfaces,=20
* flexible query languages,=20
* topic detection,=20
* cross language retrieval,=20
* content indexing of multimedia information,
* Information extraction and mining
* Modeling user context,
* Ontology based Information Retrieval Systems,=20
* Spoken IR,
* Search engines,
* Mobile search engines,
* models of information access and retrieval,=20
* applications of advanced information access and retrieval systems,=20
* multimedia and multimodal information access and retrieval,=20
* content-based and collaborative information filtering,=20
* distributed information access and retrieval.=20

Guidelines for Submission:
Original papers from the above-mentioned or other related areas will be con=
sidered.=20
This includes three categories of submissions:=20
1) original and unpublished research;=20
2) reports of innovative computing applications; and=20
3) reports of successful technology transfer to new problem domains.=20
Peer groups with expertise in the IAR area will blindly review submissions =
to the track.=20
Each submitted paper will be reviewed by at least three referees.=20
Accepted papers will be published in the annual ACM SAC conference proceedi=
ngs.=20
Submissions should be in electronic format,=20
via the website: eCMS site http://sac.cs.iupui.edu/SAC2009/
Submissions must follow the template reported at:=20
http://www.acm.org/conferences/sac/sac2009/downloads09.htm=20
Each paper can have a length of 5 pages according to the template, with a m=
aximum of 3=20
extra pages in the camera ready format; each extra page will be charged 80U=
SD.
Submissions should be printable on a standard printer on common paper forma=
ts, such as=20
US letter and A4.=20
The author(s) name(s) and address(es) must NOT appear in the body of the pa=
per,=20
and self-reference should be in the third person. This is to facilitate bli=
nd review.=20
Only the title should be shown at the first page without the author's infor=
mation."
Papers should be submitted per track using the provided automated submissio=
n system.=20
Submission of the same paper to multiple tracks is not allowed. For more in=
formation=20
please visit the SAC 2009 Website.
