Information Re= trieval technologies=20 are currently being used in many different application contexts that go far= beyond the initial=20 scope of their design. The application of models and techniques proposed an= d tested in standard=20 experimental contexts to new application areas is a very challenging task t= hat is worth of great=20 attention by the researchers. Nowadays there is a growing need to access and retrieve relevant distribute= d information from=20 anywhere and across media, across languages and across modalities. With the= expansion of the Internet=20 and of the Web, and the availability of mobile devices other access techniq= ues have been identified=20 and developed, such as Recommender Systems and Information Filtering system= s, Question Answering=20 Systems, Meta-search engines, and location based services.
