Scope of the Workshop ------------------------- Patent Information Retrieval specialists in the 21st century face=20 many challenges.=20 They must search very large numbers of documents in multiple=20 languages, expressing complex=20 technological concepts through sophisticated legal clauses. Despite a=20 great deal of theoretical=20 development in Information Retrieval techniques, advanced search=20 tools for patent professionals=20 are still in their infancy. The objective of the workshop is to provide a forum for Information=20 Retrieval and Knowledge=20 Management scientists as well as Patent Retrieval experts from=20 industry to study the next=20 generation of patent search tools. We encourage IP professionals to=20 present their special=20 information needs and IR&KM researchers to present relevant technical=20 ideas, for example for=20 high recall search in prior art searching. We will also promote=20 exchange of ideas on measuring=20 the progress of system performance for retrieval tasks in the=20 intellectual property domain.=20 The outcome of this workshop will be incorporated into a TREC track=20 including patent search,=20 which is planned for 2009. 2.) Topics of Interest ------------------------- We solicit two types of papers: research papers and industry papers.=20 Suggested topics for research papers include, but are not limited to: * Information retrieval evaluation=20 * Test collections=20 * Large-scale information retrieval experiments=20 * Parallel and distributed information retrieval=20 * Ranking strategies=20 * Query validation and query quality analysis=20 * Query expansion=20 * Interactive retrieval=20 * Session-based information retrieval=20 * User modeling=20 * Handling of noisy data (OCR/spelling/typing errors)=20 * XML retrieval=20 * Cross-lingual information retrieval=20 Industry papers shall present research challenges.=20 Suggested topics include, but are not limited to: * Patent search workflow=20 * Patent search strategies=20 * Information need of the patent researcher=20 * Shortcomings of current patent search tools=20 * Case studies=20 * Quality of patent data=20 3.) Submission Guidelines -------------------------- The Workshop Committee encourages the submission of high quality=20 research and industrial papers, which are not published or under=20 consideration elsewhere, with special emphasis on Patent=20 Retrieval evaluation methods. Research papers will be (double blind)=20 peer-reviewed by at least 3 members of the international program=20 committee. Manuscripts should be formatted using the=20 ACM camera-ready templates (both for MS word and Latex) available at=20 http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates .=20 There are two styles on the website. Both the Strict Adherence to=20 SIGS and the Tighter Alternate style are allowed. Papers cannot=20 exceed 8 pages in length.=20 A website with camera-ready instructions is available.=20 Full papers should be submitted in PDF format to=20 http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=3Dpair08.=20 The accepted papers will be published in book form. =20 4.) Important Dates -------------------=20 Individual workshop papers due July 20, 2008=20 Notification of Acceptance: August 10, 2008=20 Camera ready August 15, 2008 (hard deadline for publication)=20 Workshop date: October 30, 2008=20 =20 5.)
