"Old semiotic theory" could stand a bit of disambiguation.
"Old" in the sense that the basic sign relational framework
goes back to Peirce?  That would be true enough.

There is a relation to "universal constructions" in category theory --
many aspects of which Peirce anticipated -- and these crack, for all
"practical" purposes, many old chestnuts that philosophers continue
to chew on.  Of course, philosophers tend to gather their chestnuts
far afield from the trees that mathematicians hug ...

For my part, the factorization angle serves its purpose in giving us
a novel way of looking at some old problems, one that springs us from
the traps of the usual stale dichotomies.
