Hi Gang,

This topic brought to mind a passage I read in Plato somewhere,
where he's talking about the Pythagorean Lambda and says something
to the effect that the Ancients -- ancients to him -- had discovered
that systems of harmony based on dichotomies will always lead to discord
and strife, so that's why we need to bring in the chords based on threes.

Anyway, I spent a futile week trying to find the passage in my old books,
though I did find a lot of related stuff on the web when I finally became
really desperate (e.g. http://www.cs.utk.edu/~mclennan/BA/PT/D-moretet.html ).

One of the big themes in Peirce's work is the need to escape insipid
dualisms by embedding them in more comprehensive triadic perspectives.

By the way, there's a whole lot about time -- and several ideas
that sound a lot like the ''Monadology'' -- in Plato's ''Timaeus'',
one the places where I thought I read the passage about 2's and 3's.
