Those of us who consider logic to be a normative science and
natural philosophy to be part of philosophy will shy away from
pontificating infallible lines of demarcation here, but I might
point to Peirce's various nunciations of the pragmatic maxim and
his highlighting the role of hypostatic abstraction in mathematics
as genuine advances that are very relevant to our immediate question.

Well, I might if you gave me just a tad more than a hundred years ...
