The root idea is a measure on distributions that achieves
its maximum when the distribution is uniform.  You can call
that a measure of dispersion, entropy, uncertainty, or variety,
according to taste.  But variety is a two-edged sword, depending
on whether it's the environment presenting the organism with variety
that it has to control or it's the organism exploiting the variety of
its response repertoire to master the vicissitudes of its environment.
