Charles S. Peirce mined his theory of information from a logical,
qualitative, and semiotic stratum that supplies a foundation and
a motivation for the quantitative considerations of measure theory.
Working within the triadic framework of sign relations, his theory
had full-fledged semantic and pragmatic dimensions built in from
the very outset.  Though he lectured on the "laws of information"
at Harvard and the Lowell Institute in 1865 and 1866, suggesting
them as clues to the riddles of scientific inference, the richness
of this vein would fall beneath the notice of the dyadic reductionism
that was all the rage in the 1900s.
