What are -- or ought to be -- iconic, indexical, and symbolic sign relations?

With that question we come to a fork in the road, one that we frequently come to in discussions of 
semiotics.  So far we've been using terms like “relation”, “triadic relation”, and “sign relation” 
on the assumption that each of us knows what the other means by them, but it's been my experience 
that a diversity of meanings attach to these terms, that different people are conceiving different 
subjects under these headings, even among people who consider themselves close readers of Peirce.

As a rule, I find that the great majority of variant interpretations can be clustered under two 
headings.  For want of better names I will start out calling them “extensional” and “intensional” 
conceptions of relations.  I already sense that the crux of the issue lies elsewhere, but I can't 
quite pin it down in so many words yet.  It is partly a difference of cognitive modality or style, 
so we can refer to “extensional thinking” and “intensional thinking”, with the understanding that 
most of us do both at least some of the time and only with people who are biased exclusively to one 
style or the other does it makes sense to speak of “extensional thinkers” or “intensional thinkers”.
