Winpod and Win98SE and Adaptec AHA 1490 card - how do I get a drive letter?

Any help would be appreciated ( not to mention preventing futher clumps of 
hair being pulled out by the roots).

Have brand New 10GB Ipod (windows version) .
machine is a compaq Presario 100p (128RAM/400Mhz) Runing win98SE.
The firewire card is a 2 port Adapatec AHA 1490 IEEE 1394 ( PCI card) that was 
bundled with a Canon DV camera. 

Have downloaded and installed the latest Firewire update. 

My Computer>Properties>Device tab shows the card bus without comment or 
question mark. 
When I connect the Winpod after a short while I get the Apple logo on the 
winpod screen, shortly afterwards followed by a big tick and the caption "Ok 
to disconnect".

On the win machine the devices tab in the My Computer device listing shows 
that a bus controller is now connected to the Firewire card - and that an 
IEEE 1394 Disk is coonected to that. But the disk has an excalmation mark, 
and its properties show a Code 10, no Drive letter is assigned and I am 
recomended to update the driver.

Basically the situation as pint 2 of the Ephod Treobleshoting Guide. I have 
double checked that all the Driver files are insatlled and cannot find ( and 
not for want of looking) any later driver that would help me out.

When I disconnect the Ipod, I get a blue screen, but not a fatal one ("any Key 
does dump me back in what seems a functioning System, and the Devices tab 
know longer shows the IEEE Disk).

Any Ideas?
