Re: Winpod and Win98SE and Adaptec AHA 1490 card - how do I get a drive letter?

Well I am starting to tear my hair out - I have now a brand new laptop as well 
with WinXp installed, it has an internal Texas instruments OHCI firewire card 
in it, Also I have another Ipod that a cousin asked me to get for him - it is 
the new windows version 15GB Ipod with docking cradle and 2.0 Firmware.

On the new Laptop both Ipod's (the 10GB and 15GB) do mount and appear as a 
drive, but neither of them are able to get Music from either Ephod or MMJB, 
and when I try to copy files to the mounted drive in Windows explorer I ma 
getting very erratic results.
Very small files (under 50 KB) seem to copy OK and appear on the Drive.
I tried copying a larger MP3 file (around 4.2 MB) and it gave frequent File 
Write errors - Saying that it "failed to copy (filename) : cyclic redundancy 
check."
Attempting to run the Sytem restore on the 15GB Ipod and it just complains 
that another program is accessing the ipod. I removed MMJB and Ipod watcher 
from the sytem and tried running agian - it then complains it cannot mount 
the Ipod, on both the 15 GB and 10Gb Ipods.
This despite the fact that the Ipod is shown as mounted in Windows and appears 
as a drive ( but still is unable to have anything written to it larger than 
50KB. 
On one occasion a 5mb file did get copied - but that took almost 10 minutes - 
and even though it is an MP3 file it does not appear on the Ipod. Also the 15 
GB Ipod reports that only 8GB are free. 
The 10GB Ipod had all the same problems, so I tried to run the System Restore 
on it , this succeeded in formatting it but not in restoring the system - 
which exited with a Disak Write error.

The Desktop Computer (with the Adaptec card) has been updated with Windows 
millenium edition, (it really did not meet the hardware standard for an Xp 
update. The install was a clean one (eg on a freshly formatted disk). Every 
other peripheral connected to it (and there are a few) functions as expected. 
But it remains unable to mount either Ipod - even the 10GB that was formatted 
but unable to be restored- the error is the same as under Win98 SE - an 
inability to mount it as a disk and Code 10 in the device manager next to the 
IEEE Disk, whilst the Adaptec Firewire card otherwise functions normally, and 
has no trouble downloading video from the Canon DV Mv1 that it came 
originally bundled with.

I have swapped Firewire cables around ( even got an extra non Apple cable to 
try) - rebooted both windows (Xp and Millenium) machines a few times, removed 
and reinstalled firewire card adapters Drivers, reset the Ipods. The Ipod 
that got formatted by the Sytem restore utility has also been formatted using 
the "format f: /fs:FAT32 /q" command, and the quick format and full format 
utilities on the XP laptop - every format succeeds, but still attemppting to 
run restore produces the file write error, and moving a large file produces 
the cyclic redundancy check error and a file copy error.

Given my experience with the 10GB ipod I am reluctant to attempt to format the 
15GB ipod, or attempt the Restore utility again on it.

So my current situation is 2 very new Ipods, 2 computers (one of which is 
brand new) with 2 OS's that are supposed to be compatible with the windows 
version of the Ipod, 2 Firewire adapters, 3 cables and absolutely no joy.
