In theory AAC (MP4) can achieve 20-30% better compression than MP3. (Thats same quality at a lower bitrate) However no encoder has been properly tuned to be that good yet, so it's probably better to stick with --alt-preset extreme for now. One day however, there will most likely be a superior codec, that day, is not today. Not for the iPod at least. You could always try a slightly lower highpass, if you can't hear particuarlarly hi freqs. Depends on your listening equipment though i suppose. And it might not save you a huge amount of space.
