During one of the times you get the iPod to mount properly, try double 
clicking on that add/remove hardware icon and getting properties for 
the iPod ... and changing the drive letter that it's assigned to 
something else.  See if that helps.

Also -- start investigating your firewire card.  Make sure it's been 
deemed 100% compatible by other iPod users.
