Re: iPod no longer recognized on Windows 2000, arg!

This may not be germane to your situation, but here are a couple of obvious
questions:

1).  Does the Win2k disk management service "see" your iPod when it is
plugged in?  (Right-click on My Computer, select "Manage" and then select
"Disk Management."

2). Are you sure you still have a FAT32 formatted iPod?  (Or was yours iPod
a MacPod to begin with?)

3). Are you sure you don't have any portion of the MMJ software installed on
your system?

4). Are you logged in with Admin privileges?  (You are using Win2k, right?)

I've found with my 13 month old 10 gig scroll wheel iPod and my 9 month old
20 gig iPod that there is only 1 sure-fire way to restore / update firmware,
or to restore the iPod when its gotten hosed (happened a couple of times
through stupidity on my part.)  All of the other restore/update methods seem
to fail for my winpods, but this method works every time.  (Note: this
doesn't apply to new version 2x dock iPods.)  (Also note that this info is a
repeat of the method that has been posted here many times before by other
folks.)

a). "Downgrade" the firmware to 1.21 by using the WinniePod updated /
restorer from the-midfield.com:
http://bellatrix.pcl.ox.ac.uk/~mark/files/winniepod_updater.121.exe  This
should reformat the iPod as FAT32 and give you a functioning firmware and an
iPod that will connect to your machine.  At times, I've had to "force" an
otherwise hung iPod into firewire mode to get the updater to work:

b). Obtain the mac OS9 version of the 1.3 version firmware:

c). Extract the firmware image file from the downloaded iPod130.smi.bin file
using the firmware extractor available here:

d). Update the firmware using the Podtronics firmware updater available
here: http://www.iweenie.com/files/Ipodupdater2_with_installer.exe ... but
with first having replaced the ipudll.dll with the zipped dll found here:
http://www.iweenie.com/files/ipudll.zip

I'm not sure why, but all the other update mechanisms seem to fail for me.
But that one, while cumbersome, works every time.

Here is what it says:

when looking at the violation of the iPod, it tells me it can't find the
necessary drivers and a Code 31. ARG!

Yet when i run the iPod updater and the iPod is plugged in, it stalls for
about 90 seconds, then says it cannot mount it, yet when I run it when the
iPod
isn't plugged in, it just merely states that it isn't plugged in. So
obviously
my computer knows SOMETHING is being plugged in, it's just not working.

So I guess taking it back to the Apple Store and telling them it isn't
working won't help, cause on this end its pretty much my problem and not the
iPod's.
I'm just about finished with bothering everyone about this.
