Re: Adjust MP3 volume

Thanks to Randolph and Joe for the replies.

I have been using the full MP3Gain program since it first came out.
However, as far as the iPod is concerned it does not solve my problems as I
require the gain of the MP3s held on my computer to be different from the
gain of those held in my iPod. This is why the inclusion of the MP3Gain
runtime in the iPod is so useful for me.
I don't know if anyone on the list realises this but the European iPods are
volume restricted due to some stupid French law. This makes both the output
from the headphone out and the cradle line out too low when the volume of
the MP3s has been adjusted by MP3Gain (I have to adjust the volume of the
MP3s to stop them distorting in the iPod). i.e. Once I have adjusted the
volume using the MP3Gain preset included with the Ephpod I cannot hear the
music through the headphones when I am in a street with any amount of
traffic as the volume is too low (even with the iPod running at full
volume). In addition the line out signal is too low to drive my hifi or car
stereo satisfactorily, and consequently the sound through both is thin and
weedy.
I have a choice. Either I increase the gain of the MP3s to listenable level
and accept the distortion or reduce the level and accept that I will not be
able to hear the music near traffic or on my bicycle (due to wind on ears),
or use it in conjunction with my hifi or car stereo. (Actually It is being
replaced next week, and then if that makes no difference, which I know it
won't as I have a friend with a new iPod and we have tested together, I'll
have to return it)

I, and quite a few others are currently in dispute with Apple about this
volume restriction.

So, it would be very useful to know what preset MP3Gain volume is used in
Ephpod for my dealings with Apple. I think it is probably 89 (as MP3Gain
suggest), although Joe thinks it may be 98 (which seems to be far too high
to be likely), but is not sure.

Does anyone know?

On the MP3Gain GUI its 89db.

If you want full control to customize the 'gain', then use the MP3Gain GUI
from http://www.geocities.com/mp3gain/.  You can experiment and find the
best settings for that work for you.
