Ephpod to iPod = beginning of songs cut off

I transferred a bunch of songs to the iPod (first time) and the first few seconds of them were all cut off. The files on the computer are fine, so something much be going wrong with the copying over to the iPod. Any idea what might be happening? TjL ps - my Windows iPod doesn't seem to charge when plugged in to the firewire port.
