Updating ID3 tags on iPod

When I update ID3 tags for songs on my hard drive and then sync using ephpod, the database on the iPod does not reflect the changes. I presume this is because (1) The ID3 tags on the corresponding files in the iPod do not get updated and/or (2) The database on the iPod does not get updated to reflect changes to the files on the iPod Is there a way to make the iPod database reflect the changes without wiping the iPod clean and resyncing?
