why not try the Transpod? i have one in the car and its great. not only does it not drain your iPod, but charges it while on the go. Plus, it's cradle makes it convenient to look at and fiddle with your iPod while in traffic or on the move. I had a FM transmitter fitted to one of my car stereos (in my camper van). They are available now. However mine was not made by Griffin, as far as I know. It gets it's juice from the car radio (so does not run down the iPods battery) and seems to fit to the ariel socket. However, the quality is not good and the signal cuts out now and again. I understand that this is the weakness of the radio transmitters in general. My other vehicle has a Blaupunkt stereo. Blaupaunkt sell a lead that fits to the back and converts to a line in socket. This works very well and the sound is perfect. It seems to use the CD changer input but can be fitted whether you actually have a CD changer or not. The line in socket is best used with the 3rd generation iPod cradle line out as the volume levels are matched (unlike the headphone out, although this works as well) I have been told that most modern car stereos have this facility. If yours does I would not bother with the FM transmitter. In addition, the Apple store is now selling a lead made by Belkin for the third generation iPods that provides power to an iPod via the cigarette lighter and also provides a line in socket... this all from the (3rd generation) iPod without requiring the cradle.
