No, you can't do that to, for example, convert from Mac to Win or to fix some kind of problems. The disk must have certain structures (partition table, etc.) and some space reserved for the firmware, and only the Apple Updater (or a bit of hacking) can create them. A format won't do that. A format can repair some problems that not affect those structures, though. iPod!, uPod?
