What happens if you press the Back button after it has skipped the song?
Does the iPod play the song then? It just skips the first song when you
manually pick a playlist/song? What firmware version are you using?
There used to be a bug in firmware versions 1.2 (1.1?) thru 1.2.5 which
caused this behaviour, due to a low hd spinup time or something like that.
I had 1.2.6 short time, but I think they fixed it there. And definitely it's
(mostly) fixed on 1.3.

Go to the archive and search for "skip songs" for some related posts.

Some things that may (or may not) help:

  - Use folders F00 .. F19 on your iPod
  - Let EphPod rename your files on the iPod to short names (i.e. don't
preserve filenames).
  - Defrag the iPod.
