"it" being Demon? According to my mail headers, I'm guessing your box
there is resolving MX records for each recipient domain. Tried using
blueyonder's smarthost instead (smtp.blueyonder.co.uk)? That seems to
work fine for everything I do from here.

Could well be that your box's IP ended up in ORBZ or similar (dynamic IP
abused by someone beforehand, then you get assigned the IP... seen that
with a mate's DSL account from BT).

Ar. However, this does leave the message of "Anyone is free to join the
ConsumeBristol mailing list APART FROM DEMON CUSTOMERS". Which doesn't
look good. If you can't go off a smarthost, simply set up a filter on
incoming to bitbucket any bounces from Demon...
