I've done that once, and belive me it is way easier to make a SOAP
interface.

I think you should use the SOAP route. it should be a quite easy to move
templatehandling a level up where needed to be able to use the
backendfunctions from a soapserver.

Please note my interest in a SOAP interface, allthough I do not have any
time right now to help you develop it.
