here's my patch which i think will resolve this issue without breaking 
backwards compatibility.

since we're approaching a release and this is a patch to an important 
method, some consideration about whether to apply it is needed. i have 
some questions:

1. can anyone (abre?) confirm that this patch fixes the problem?
2. are there people out there who are willing to test a patched version to 
ensure that ECS still runs ok with their applications?
3. can anyone see mistakes in the code (from visual inspection)?
