I'll be happy to test the patch and let you know the results.  It appears that the attachment did not make it through.  Maybe it needs to be zipped?

here's my patch which i think will resolve this issue without breaking 
backwards compatibility.

since we're approaching a release and this is a patch to an important 
method, some consideration about whether to apply it is needed. i have 
some questions:

1. can anyone (abre?) confirm that this patch fixes the problem?
2. are there people out there who are willing to test a patched version to 
ensure that ECS still runs ok with their applications?
3. can anyone see mistakes in the code (from visual inspection)?
