Your method of addressing the problem is much better than the one I proposed ;)

I've tested the patch and have confirmed that it does fix the problem.  I've also attached the source for a rather rudamentary test.  The unicode escape characters are Hebrew, so you may need that font to test.

The patch did not seem to have any adverse effects.
