Regarding James 2.2 honestly, I have not much knowledge of it, as when I 
started joining the project, it was James version 3.3.0 already. I would 
think it's probably quite different and you might clearly need some 
migration work between version 2 and 3 of James.

Benefits I would think clearly security first, I would guess there might 
be so many vulnerabilities up on such an old version of James. But 
likely in terms of performance as well (depending your usage of James as 
well). More modular as well I think compared to before. And likely more 
features too :) (like the JMAP protocol for example depending on the 
flavor of James?)

Well there is many reasons to upgrade the version of an old software. 
But that mainly depends as well about your usage of it, and the time you 
are ready to invest in it, cause a migration from those 2 major versions 
isn't easy I think.
