That's true, I could do that. In fact, I've been putting the profiles in the settings.xml file. the problem with this is there is a whole mess of things you can't put in a profile if it sits in an external file. My main reason for wanting to put the profile in my pom is I want to use different dependencies depending on the profile. This isn't a showstopper since Maven is recognizing the profile. It just makes me look at tons of errors since my dependecies aren't included in the ide.
