Gotcha.

I do quite a bit of batching with Java too... it's a convieniant
language for calling stored procs in many different database
implementations. But there too I've been frustrated by the lack of OS
integration. 

Not being able to access environment variables is one reason. Poor
support for pipes is another.

But I'm not a windows user so maybe that's not an issue for you.
