Because most of my command-line apps are network and database intensive
batch processes like generating monthly invoices for 5000 customers with
line items stored in one database and pricing information stored in another
(STOOPID CRM/Accounting infrastructure that at least I don't get blamed for)
that take 30-45 minutes to run at each pop (waaaaay too many business rules
to figure out pricing structure that are a side-effect of the STOOPID
CRM/Accounting infrastructure that at least I don't get blamed for). The JVM
startup time isn't significant. My accounting team doesn't notice a
difference between a 30 minute run and a 32 minute run. They *do* notice
when I've undercharged our customers by a dollar a transaction over 5000
customers and 500 transactions per customer though. And my customers notice
when I've overcharged of course :)
