JSR 223 begins with a general BSF-like pluggable scripting language API (in
fact, one of the BSF maintainers is in the group now) and then proceeds to
build a web scripting API on top of that.

The base javax.script API will be similar to BSF, but a bit more sophisticated
in terms of scripting engine discovery, namespace management, and other things.
Then there is the mapping of that API to cover web applications...  The idea
being that you can bundle your PHP pages or pages written in any scripting
language inside of your web app (WAR/EAR deployment) in a standard way.

I will take a look at it and suggest it be updated.  I think the original focus
was more on the web app point but has really generalized into a full pluggable
scripting API.

There should be a public review in a month or two.  And of course this is all
subject to the JCP process... so who knows where it will go.
