This is a good question and will be something that we watch carefully as
we work through the specification.  We intend only to standardize a core
grammar and set of tools.  If you look at other projects such as Xalan /
Xerces that are bundled with the J2SE, there are many features that are
available that are not exposed by the standard API (or in this case the
specification).

I believe that the core grammar and usage of the language is stable enough
that it won't radically change in the future.  We will of course preserve
the option to enhance the grammar and add new facilities and those can
eventually be added to the specification in later revisions and
maintenance JSRs.

In other words, we shouldn't have to wait on the JCP to innovate in
BeanShell, we just may have to wait for new features to be added to the
spec.

I am interested in feedback from others who have worked through these
issues  in other JSRs.
