No Projects or Projects Discontinued with Realm

When I turn on JAAS authentication or let Spring handle security
through a filter, all of my projects become discontinued or disappear
as if they weren't read from the contex.xml

Any reason why this would happen? How do I fix it? Is it because the
dashboard cannot contact jmx or something? Why? How can I get it to
talk to JMX when I have authentication turned on?
