How to detect build failure?

Hi All,
How can I tell if the ant build I run actually completes succesfully or not? For example, if there is a compile error, how does that result get passed back to cruise control? I know there is the <onsuccess> child in the publishers element, but that only seems to indicate if the ant build script completes.
Cheers,
DB
