Darcs modification set not working?

Hi,
I can't seem to get the darcs repository modificationset to work. Log
suggests it passing a dodgy command to darcs - sticking debug logs on
doesn't give me anything else.
I tried using both options and giving the local file location and the
http address of my repository. Always the same message.
Anyone else got this working? Any ideas?
I'm running the latest binary build on Ubuntu. With darcs 2.2.0 (I
also tried 1.9.0 - same error).
Many Thanks,
Phil.
