Standalone maven goals with maven2 plugin?

I'm intending to run a Maven2 standalone goal in a cruisecontrol project
schedule using the maven2 plugin. Looking at the documentation it says that
a pom.xml is required but the standalone goal doesn't need one.

Do I create a dummy pom.xml(bad) or use the <exec /> plugin to run Maven2
manually? Any other options?
