Dear Reader,

This week, ONJava.com interviews JBoss leaders Marc Fleury
and Nathalie Mason, who argue that Sun should certify JBoss
because it's to their advantage for the sake of the J2EE
platform and its overall market-share. They also talk about
the short and long-term goals of JBoss and where it's
heading. Technically, JBoss is there as a J2EE container
with EJB and JMX development and deployment features. Why
not certify it? Weigh in on the great certification debate.

Also this week, O'Reilly's "Java Performance Tuning" author
returns with his latest Java Design and Performance
Optimization column. This time, he talks about micro-tuning
your Java methods; specifically, this means speeding up small
sections of code out of context, by profiling and analyzing
that code and using some of the many techniques available
to make code run faster.

And finally, ONJava.com presents the first of a five part
series of book excerpts from O'Reilly's "J2ME in a Nutshell"
by Kim Topley. Part one is an overview of MIDP, a version
of the Java platform based on CLDC and KVM that is aimed at
small footprint devices, principally cell phones and two-way
pagers. It is also suitable for running on PDAs, and an
implementation is available for PalmOS Version 3.5 and higher.

I'll be at JavaOne next week, spending much of my time at the
O'Reilly booth. Drop by and say hello, if you get a chance.

Sincerely,
Steve Anglin
O'Reilly Network Java Editor

JBoss: Sun Needs Us
In this interview, JBoss leaders Marc Fleury and Nathalie Mason
argue that Sun should certify this open source J2EE project for
the health of the platform: "We are seeing the beginning of
market-share loss to .NET. We urge Sun to certify us and give
us the backing and credibility to be succesful in competing
against Microsoft as the entry-level J2EE offering."
