Ant & XDoclet are requirements for everything J2EE I now do :

   Apache Ant -- of course...so many options in this thing, it's=20
unbelievable (my favorite lesser know options is being able to turn tabs in=
=20
your source code into x-number of spaces).  I'm pretty sure there are VSS=20
options native to Ant...if not, you may want to look at using CVS if at all=
=20
possible.
   XDoclet (http://xdoclet.sourceforge.net) -- invaluable, especially when=
=20
developing EJBs (I think there are tags for Orion, which I'd assume works=20
with Oracle...if not, someone either has templates they can give you, or it=
=20
would be worth building your own).

A good J2EE unit testing tool is Apache's Cactus, but I don't have enough=20
experience with it to call it a requirement.  I too would like to know what=
=20
other testing tools (especially performance testing) people are using...

As to meeting a schedule without fail, I don't think I'm the best person to=
=20
answer this question :-).   I find inspiration in many extreme programming=
=20
concepts around managing expectations, especially where you involve the=20
client to determine what the requirements are, and the developers in=20
determining how long each requirement will take...then negotiating with the=
=20
client and letting them determine the trade offs between time and=20

p.s., In preparing for this project, I would allocate time for you and your=
=20
developers to learn the tools.  Don't just run through the examples that=20
come with the tools (unless you want to build a false sense of=20
confidence).  Rather, take the examples and build new things on top of=20
them.  Mimic what you are going to be doing on this project (servlets,=20
ejbs, etc...), and really exercise your knowledge of the tools (e.g., use=20
ant to create a build system full of build rules for your prototype ejbs &=
=20
servlets; use XDoclet to create deployment descriptors and home/remote=20
interfaces for those prototypes; create a single rule in ant that builds=20
your code from scratch, starts your J2EE server, deploys your jar/war/ear,=
=20
runs your unit test, strips any tabs in your code, and check the changes=20
into VSS, etc...).  Knowing as much about how these things work (and how=20
they don't) before you enter panic mode is a big plus...  BTW, there are=20
some pretty good presentation tools out there, and more coming out every=20

=20
advice, Oracle AS may do some things very very well, but it probably does=20
not do everything you need.
