Dear Reader,

JavaOne 2002 in San Francisco is now over.  In retrospect, there
was interesting coverage of Java Web services and wireless Java.  
But that's not all.

JavaOne started with controversy surrounding the JCP's, JSR's, and
open source.  The open source community had feared the worst after
a recent JCP vote that open source Java would no longer be 
supported.  This was followed by an outcry in the open source 
community, led by Apache.  In response, in the keynote on day 2 
at JavaOne, Apache VP Jason Hunter and Sun CEO Scott McNeally 
outlined an agreement negotiated between Sun and Apache that has 
broad ranging implications to Java developers and to the future 
of Java itself. First, all in-progress and future Sun-led JSRs 
will be made available under a license that allows open source. 
There was more to this agreement as well.  Find out the details,

For a daily review, ONJava.com JSP and Servlets editor Sue Spielman
reports on each day's activities from keynotes to interesting
sessions on JAX, wireless and more at this year's JavaOne. The
first days gave a glimpse of what is to come in J2SE 1.5 and J2EE
1.4,  with emphasis on Java-based Web Services and the Java Web
Services Developer Pack (WSDP).  This was followed by Sue's closer
examination of the WSDP, which came with a quick scoop after a
pow-wow with some of its technical leads.  On day 3, Sue found
the conference focus to be on wireless and J2ME.  Day 4 and 5 
wrap it all up with some specific and upcoming technologies that
we can all use for building the Web Services and Wireless apps
being touted throughout the show.
