Why do you need to add log4j to ANT_HOME/lib?  I've never ever done 
that.  The build puts log4j in the classpath already.  Seems like a totally 
unnecessary step.  Oh, and the recommended copy of ant is the latest 1.5.3 
build but, minimally, one should be using ant-1.5.1 as ant-1.5 has some 
serious bugs that are quite apparent when building the contrib 
package.  ant-1.5.2 has an annoying bug that affects jar files and 
shouldn't be used.

Sounds like extra server mantenance.  catalina-install and catalina-deploy 
don't require any manual editing of server.xml and you never have to worry 
about where Barracuda is on your system.  Everything just works.
