Hi Greg,

I also have some Arbitrary Expression Swimlanes and they haven't produced
any problems for us.

Here's a bit mor of a Idea of One of my Processes (Just some timing you can
work with)...

Total time for all of this is about 3seconds ( some time is not logged or
accounted for ) but in total it takes about 3 seconds

Database Server is a P4, 2G ram running Server 2003, SQL2000
MVC and MDB's are in JBOSS on a PentiumD with 2G,
Shark is running on a P4 with 2G ram in Tomcat-5.5.9

MVC Sends Request ( 100ms)
Shark Logon ( 20ms)
Shark Start Process ( 2100ms)
Shark get Next Activity (500ms)
Shark sends reaponse (100ms)

Shark Starting the process does the following

Slams some variables on the process context
Starts the process
   First activity is a subflow
Subflow first activity is to call a wrapper, (Sends a request to the MDB
Server, MDB Server retrieves a DB Object, Marshalls it to XML, Sends it
back) and placed the result in a wfVariable
Subflow Second activity is Manual start

At this point the XPDL Stops, the Shark Get Next Activity get's some Process
Variables, Packages it in the return message, and sends it back to the MVC

As you can see, The network connectivity is really used here.

I had a problem a while back with the Database Configuration, The recovery
model was set to full and as the database grew over about 200Mb there was a
performance loss on Shark. When I Changed it to Basic Recovery Model, the
performance of shark improved, especially when the database grew.

Before I Changes the Recovery Model, I Was nuking the Database every second
day ...

This might be something to look at (I'm not sure of Oracle's recovery
models).

Neville

Thanks for the feedback.

Actually, the very first activity checks one of the process variables and
does a manual complete.

The only other "non-standard" thing we're doing is using the default
"ArbitraryExpression" swimlane and then using the
XPDLStraightParticipantMappingAssignmentManager to assign activities to
various users.

Hi Greg,

This does seem to be a bit long, fpr me to start my processes etc. takes < 5
seconds (This is for the MVC To connect to the sharkserver over the wire,
for Shark Server to slam a few variables on the process context, start the
process, run the first few activities till it hits a manual start, and
return the manual start activity back to the MVC).

I Had a problem where this was taking up to 120seconds to do, and we traced
it down to a network issue of the network cards being forced to 100Mb, when
we set it to Auto-Detect, the performace improved substancially.

Just a bit of background info for you.

Personnally I Think that's a bit long, however, what are the 5 activities
doing?? (They are not perhaps lingering on some time).

PS: If you are running anything over the network, check your connectivity. (
The network stuff took us about a week to figure out )

I'm running Shark 1.1 using a Oracle 8i (I've also tried 9i) for a database.
Its taking approximately 30 seconds to create a new process and return using
the workflowConnection.createProcess(package_id, process_id); method.

Our process is fairly simple and only have five activities. We're setting
about 10 process context variables. Is this typical for most other people's
experiences? That seems like an awful lot of time to create a process? I
haven't done any database tuning since running the Shark configure when we
setup the database.

Any feedback on your experience would be appreciated.

Greg
