Melissa, have you looked at the code here:

What you want to do is follow these steps:
configure shark (if you are using hsqldb then just use the shark.conf 
as-is (at least to begin with), otherwise you have to configure shark to 
use your database then read the "Configure shark" section here:
http://shark.objectweb.org/doc/sfs/sharkfromscratch1appendix.html), then 
load your xpdl into shark (Example 3 in How-To link above), then create 
and start a process instance (example 4 in How-To link above)

Write back if you need more help with this. Shark is a bit difficult to 
start with but once you understand it, it is quite intuitive and a great 
piece of software..:)
