map.xml body vs alternateBody vs nonVirtualAlternateBody

I have a question about the map.xml syntax. What is the difference between <body>, <alternateBody>. and <nonVirtualAlternateBody>. Some methods (e.g. toString()) include all three. Under what circumstance is each used?
