We'll also want to do this through a filter with our filter manager. The question then becomes do we filter on submission of a message and take up extra characters in the database or do we filter when the message is displayed, possibly delaying viewing. My vote is to take the extra delay when the message is posted so that we don't have a zillion hits to the filter manager.

It would be neat to have a simple filter that is executed with each display of a message to convert any standard emoticon into an image. This is related to a general feature request for filters that can handle such things as dirty word replacement.
