the latest iteration of the LayoutManager allows you to work with the blocks in anyway that you wish.  You can define any number of columns (I think) and put blocks in any of those. 1 block must be defined as a the module content block though so that modules know where to display their information.  Look in www/links/links-module.xml for a sample module and www/blocks/blocks-config.xml for blocks config.  The base loader for these is www/WEB-INF/layout-config.xml.

Description:
In the current iteration of the layout manager, there seems to be no way to have a website laid out in any different manner than the way the JLCP comes (blocks|News|blocks). The layout manager needs to be flexible enough to allow the site builder to layout blocks in any manner that they choose.
