Intermediate layer continued

The wiki has been updated to reflect the continued ideas.

We need to quickly come to a decision on the intermediate layer design. 
Once a framework is decided on, we'll then need a roadmap for any
migration.  Hopefully we can wrap this all up this week and be getting
some actual code out next week.

So if you have any thoughts or feelings about the subject, now's the
time to be heard! :)
