You describe our initial vision for jcontainer. For one reason or another it
never got off the ground. Some of us lost interest, had our time consumed by
other things or just had different focuses. It is definetly a worthwhile
idea to pursue and I will definetly help anyone I can who is working towards
something like that.

We have the technical infrastructure available, we have the url space and we
have more than a few interested parties. What is missing is people to lead
the endeavour. If you want to be part of it then I would be more than happy
to have you on board. Codehaus differs from Apache in a few different ways
and best to have a browse of codehaus website and in particular the
Manifesto (http://www.codehaus.org/Manifesto). If this sounds like a place
you can prosper in then welcome aboard ;)

The best way to get started is to have a bash at starting up some
conversation or start writing up some docs. Once confluence (an uber-wiki
from what I understand) is set up you can hack on that and there is a few
people from a a couple of different container projects here that may be able
to help out.
