Just running the Jikes RVM under gdb without using any gdb > features shows nothing out of ordinary. Unfortunately I don't have any detailed suggestions; my experience running Jikes with gdb is pretty limited. I guess Jikes isn't really crashing hard -- it's just throwing an exception that's getting caught in a "normal" way -- so I suspect you won't get anything useful from gdb.
