Jikes RVM is a very difficult thing to dive into for a one course project.  It is a
real, industrial strength system, with non-trivial build and debug procedures, and
considerable internal sophistication.  So it has a steep learning curve.  I would
hesitate even for an independent study.  I'd say six months to a year are required
for the learning and then actually accomplishing something.  In rare cases someone
might do better, but those are my thoughts ...
