Getting existing internal users to now authenticate via ldap

We Have a couple dozen users set up in Jira for last 2 years with no external authentication.  Would like to start authenticating (just passwords) them against our active directory server.  

Documentation and experimentation is leading us in circles...

Are we supposed to have 2 different user directories defined in Jira?  Are the users supposed to be set up in both?

Note:  usernames are identical in active directory versus jira database.  

We simply want to authenticate existing users in jira against our active directory server.

Any help would be appreciated.
