Jira User Directories

My friend configured something in the User Directories under Users, Groups and Roles. He added a directory which is "Microsoft Active Directory". Typed in a few ip and other info. Clicked "Test Settings", JIRA says "Connection Test Successful" then he saves it. I don't know what he did and what it's for so can someone enlighten me about that "User Directories"?
